Computer Origins

This just in - GUNNAR Optiks

Richard Hall - Friday, October 31, 2014
If you work in front of a computer for extended periods of time or gaze at your mobile device late at night, your eyes are being subjected to harsh, high-intensity blue light, which can affect your ability to sleep and cause headaches. This blue light is found across almost all electronic displays, including your phone, tablet, PC monitor and television and exposure to it for too long can lead to visual stress, eye fatigue, dry eyes, irritation and even headaches, and nobody wants that.

Your best solution? A pair of GUNNAR Optiks glasses supplied by Computer Origins. These glasses prevent the harmful blue light from reaching your eyes at no visual cost, meaning you can reduce the issues surrounding extended screen exposure and avoid eye strain from using your mobile device at night! Not only that, but GUNNAR Optiks glasses come in a variety of styles and can also be purchased as single vision prescription lenses if you require such a pair.

If you’d like to get to know GUNNAR Optiks a little better before making a decision, no worries! You can visit them at http://www.gunnars.com/

Interested in keeping your sleep cycle sound and avoiding headaches? Call Computer Origins on 9408 6000 or email us to order your pair of GUNNAR Optiks!

The Backup Club – A Computer Origins Initiative

Richard Hall - Wednesday, October 29, 2014

You don’t need car insurance.

But of course you do! You never know when you might crash, and the same goes for computers – they could crash at any time and you risk losing all of your precious photos, documents, videos etc.

But what if when that happens, you could simply restore your computer to exactly how it was before the event? No worrying over whether key photographs of your wedding day have been lost or if you now have to start a whole new tax document, instead everything would be right where you left it. It would be as though the crash had never happened.

This is where The Backup Club comes in.

Starting from only $23 per month, The Backup Club is the premium way of keeping your computer safe in the event of a hardware or software failure, something that could otherwise incur incalculable costs. Customers who sign up receive flexible, regular backups of their data and professional, non-intrusive monitoring to ensure they are successful, meaning you don’t have to worry about them as much. And in the event of your computer (or computers!) suffering a critical issue, notify us and you’ll be assisted quickly and effectively in returning it to its optimal state, like the problem was simply a bad dream.

Example: Jane, like many of us has a computer. Unfortunately her data has disappeared and she is left with no way of regaining it. Unless of course she is a Backup Club member. Jane can call Computer Origins to let us know what has occurred and armed with the professional assistance of our staff and her backup drive, set about restoring her computer to a fully-operational state.

What’s required of a customer seeking to join The Backup Club? All you need is your computer, an external hard drive and a copy of Acronis True Image which is sold here at Computer Origins. From this point a backup scheme will be performed by a Computer Origins certified professional and will have you ready to go in no time at all! Speaking of time, The Backup Club is well worth any computer user’s to ensure that all of their data is constantly safe.

· Guaranteed safety of your files thanks to regular backups;

· Low monthly fee for an invaluable service – from $23 per month;

· Vigilant monitoring of backup success and rapid reaction time in the case of a failure;

· Assistance when your computer data suffers damage in both recovering data and your computer’s previous state.

Customers can live in peace knowing that their computer data’s recovery is in safe hands with The Backup Club.

Wall of Pain

Richard Hall - Monday, April 22, 2013

A customer said to me recently that up until he experienced a failed computer hard drive of his own, he believed data loss was a myth.

A myth?

It then dawned on me from my cone of obliviousness that you, my valued customers do not see the problem of data loss as extensively as I - until now.

Now live is the Computer Origins "Wall of Pain" webpage, designed and maintained to express the reality of data loss.

Happy Easter!

The Backup Club

What is the Backup Club?

The Backup Club is a vital service now offered by Computer Origins by which the recurring backup jobs performed on your computer are closely monitored by our trusted and professional technical team.
Your lives are busy enough without having to burden yourself with the important task of making sure that your Pictures, Documents, Music and other precious computer data is being backed up not only properly but also regularly.
For a nominal fee per month*, Computer Origins will become your backup partner, frequently informing you on the status your computer’s backups. This means when a frightening event crashes your computer in the future, your backups as well as Computer Origins will be on hand to quickly restore cherished data.

Why should I join the Backup Club?

Hard drive repair and recovery consumes a significant percentage of the workshop repair time at Computer Origins.
It is understandable that this may not be especially important information to you especially if your computer is running well at the moment.
However, as so many of our customers who have lost data to crashed hard drives would now agree, frequent and up to date backups are the only true way to be protected from data loss. We strongly agree and think you should too.
This is the reason the Computer Origins Backup Club was formed, in order to make the task of backup management less of a worry in your already busy lifestyle.
Start enjoying all the other things that are more important to you and your family; become a Computer Origins Backup Club member today.

Helpful Tip #458.7

Richard Hall - Friday, May 18, 2012

Overcoming Power Anomalies

At maybe one or more times in the life of your computer or notebook, you will turn it one day and nothing will be on the screen despite the whirring or chirping sounds you can still hear inside.

In some instances you can diagnose and possibly even resolve this issue before you decide to bring your computer to Computer Origins for repair.

For Notebooks:
  • If possible switch your notebook off by the safe method; if this is not possible press and hold your button in excess of 4 seconds;
  • Make sure the battery is disconnected and also unplug your AC power source;
  • Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds;
  • Reconnect AC power source in only and turn on. If you get your screen back go ahead and reinsert the battery.

For Desktops:

  •  If possible switch your computer off by the safe method; if this is not possible press and hold your button in excess of 4 seconds;
  • Disconnect the power cable leading from the wall power socket;
  • Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds;
  • Reconnect power cable and turn on.

Success? Well done! If not, then please don't hesitate to call Computer Origins for a more advanced diagnosis.

Slay the Hoax!

Richard Hall - Friday, May 11, 2012

The concept of unscrupulous individuals performing a confidence trick has been around since before antiquity. It appears as far as the internet is concerned nothing has changed except possibly the delivery.

The anonymity of the internet in the information age has afforded any confidence trickster (con-man) the ability to avoid detection and ultimately the responsibility of the loss suffered by their victims.

You've probably heard the saying, "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me". It reasons that if we don't learn from the mistakes we make when taken in by any scam then we perhaps deserve what we get.

Forewarned is forearmed! Check out this great website called Hoax-Slayer, designed and managed by Australian Brett Christensen who since 2003 has been helping to document this sort of internet activity. From the mission of Hoax-Slayer:

"Many users inadvertently compromise their online privacy and the security of their computer equipment because of poor computer security practices. Hoax-Slayer publishes information that makes users aware of email, Internet and computer security issues and what to do about them."

Well worth a look.

!Theat Alert!

Richard Hall - Monday, March 19, 2012

Be aware of individuals ringing and claiming they are Microsoft employees or online repair technicians. The caller may mention that you have errors on your machine that they can help fix. There very well may be errors on your machine, but Microsoft or anybody that claims to repair computers will not know anything about the state of your computer from the other side of a phone (nor would Microsoft use this approach). If this happens to you then consider it highly suspicious and potentially dangerous.

If in doubt hang up.

Please pass this information on to anybody you thinks needs to know. If this has happened to you then please leave a comment that we will post here to help others recognise the warning signs.
